A choir, chorale, or chorus is a musical ensemble of singers. Choral music, in turn, is the music written specifically for such an ensemble to perform.

A body of singers who perform together is called a choir or chorus. The former term is very often applied to groups affiliated with a church (whether or not they actually occupy the choir) and the second to groups that perform in theatres or concert halls, but this distinction is far from rigid. The term "Choir" has the secondary definition of a subset of an ensemble; thus one speaks of the "woodwind choir" of an orchestra, or different "choirs" of voices and/or instruments in a polychoral composition. In typical 18th to 21st century oratorios and masses, chorus or choir is usually understood to imply more than one singer per part, in contrast to the quartet of soloists also featured in these works.

What are all the different levels in a choir?
Q. Like alto and baritone. if you had a choir what would be the choices of what level you would be in. PLease explain!
Asked by Shannon - Wed May 28 20:32:05 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There are four main vocal parts in a choir - divided into men and women, high and low. High woman's voice - soprano. Low woman's voice - alto. High man's voice - tenor. Low man's voice - baritone. Sometimes people can sing more than one part - a woman who can sing most of BOTH soprano and alto is called a mezzo. Man who can sing most of both tenor and bass is called a baritone. This is simplification - many times, singers have similar ranges of notes - but choose apart based on their ability (or not) to hold a harmony part when others are singing melody. Or they choose by the particular color or sound of their voice.

Do you know of a good website for handbell choir info?
Q. We're thinking of trying to start one in our church. We have no handbells at the moment and our organist/choir director (me!) has zero experience with handbells. They seem very expensive. Any advice?
Asked by Rapunzel XVIII - Sun Aug 26 22:49:31 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. This is one of those occasions where it would seem the Web makes it easier to research things. Google "Handbells". Our church had a handbell choir for a while. It seemed to be a matter of the director pointing to the right bellringer at the right time, and the bellringer ringing the right bell at exactly that time. Also, talk to the people at your local music store, especially the ones who provide band instruments to the local schools.

Where do i get a choir for my wedding In Melbourne Australia?
Q. I am getting married in Feb 09 in a church and dont have a choir for my wedding. Can one pay a choir or somthing to sing for the mass?
Asked by GenuineGemini - Thu Sep 18 21:34:37 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Generally, churches have their own choirs: ask at the church where your wedding will be held. If not, you can ask at a different church, or there are a number of excellent choirs in Melbourne who specialise in early sacred music (and if you want a mass, I would suggest a specialist choir: they will have the right combination of singers (bass, tenor, soprano etc) for that sort of music. Try the choirs of the colleges at Melbourne University: particularly Ormond College choir, or trinity college. A few other groups I can think of are ensemble gombert, gloriana, and the choir who sing at st John's, southgate.
